Zerubbabel Bible Study Guide

Zerubbabel

Zerubbabel

Led the first return from exile and rebuilt the Second Temple's foundation.

Teaching prompt

After the curse on Jeconiah, how does God keep the Davidic line alive through Zerubbabel?

Reflection

Where have you seen God restart something that looked finished?

Points to Jesus

Haggai 2:23 names Zerubbabel as God's chosen 'signet ring' — a deliberate reversal of the signet-ring curse on Jeconiah (Jeremiah 22:24). The line that looked cut off keeps going, and lands on Jesus (Matthew 1:12–13), the true heir of David's throne.

Discussion questions

  1. Ezra 3:10–13: Why do some weep and some shout when the foundation is laid?
  2. Haggai 2:20–23: What does God promise Zerubbabel personally?
  3. How does Matthew 1:12–13 quietly answer Jeremiah 22:30's curse on Jeconiah's line?
