Samuel Bible Study Guide

Samuel

Samuel

Last of the judges; first of the prophetic schools; anointed both Saul and David.

Teaching prompt

What changes in Israel when God 'speaks again' in 1 Samuel 3 after a long silence?

Reflection

Where in your life are you tempted to settle for human kingship instead of God's rule?

Points to Jesus

Samuel is the kingmaker who anoints David, but the everlasting King in David's line is Jesus (Luke 1:32-33). Acts 3:24 says all the prophets 'from Samuel and those who came after him' proclaimed these days of Christ.

Discussion questions

  1. 1 Samuel 3:1-10: How does young Samuel learn to recognise God's voice?
  2. 1 Samuel 8:4-9: What does Israel ask for, and how does God interpret that request?
  3. 1 Samuel 16:1-13: What does God teach Samuel about how He chooses kings?
