Teaching prompt
Why does Rachel's grief echo centuries later at Jesus' birth?
Reflection
What loss are you carrying that you're tempted to grieve alone rather than bring honestly to God?
Points to Jesus
Rachel dies near Bethlehem naming her son 'son of my sorrow' (Genesis 35:18). Matthew quotes Jeremiah's image of Rachel weeping for her children over that same region when Herod slaughters the infants at Bethlehem (Matthew 2:17-18) — her sorrow becomes the backdrop against which the Child who escapes that slaughter grows up to bear every sorrow himself.
Discussion questions
- What does Rachel's demand 'give me children, or I die' reveal about her longing?
- What name does Rachel give her son as she dies, and what does Jacob rename him?
- Why does Matthew quote Rachel weeping for her children at this exact moment in Jesus' story?
