Peter Bible Study Guide

Peter

Peter

Galilean fisherman called by Jesus; spokesman of the Twelve; preached the first Christian sermon at Pentecost.

Teaching prompt

How does Peter's restoration in John 21 redeem his denial in John 18?

Reflection

Where do you need to hear Jesus ask, 'Do you love me?'

Points to Jesus

Peter's whole story is a portrait of grace. The denying coward becomes the Pentecost preacher because Jesus — risen — sought him out (John 21). His sermons in Acts 2 and 10 hand the gospel to Jews and Gentiles alike, both built on the resurrection of Jesus.

Discussion questions

  1. Matthew 16:13-19: What does Peter confess, and how does Jesus respond?
  2. Luke 22:31-34, 54-62: How does Jesus pray for Peter, and what happens?
  3. Acts 2:14-41: What does Peter preach on the day of Pentecost?
