Teaching prompt
Why does the unloved wife become mother to the line of the Messiah?
Reflection
Where do you feel unseen or unchosen, and what would it mean to trust that God sees you there?
Points to Jesus
Leah names her fourth son Judah, 'praise,' and it is through this unloved wife's line — not Rachel's — that the scepter promise runs (Genesis 49:10) straight to 'Judah, and his brothers' in Jesus' genealogy (Matthew 1:2-3). God's choice repeatedly bypasses human preference.
Discussion questions
- What does the text say God sees in Leah, and how does He respond?
- How do the names Leah gives her sons trace her changing hope?
- What blessing does Judah, Leah's fourth son, receive from Jacob?
