Joshua Bible Study Guide

Joshua

Joshua

Successor of Moses; led Israel across the Jordan and into the Promised Land.

Teaching prompt

Joshua's name is the Hebrew form of 'Jesus' — 'the LORD saves.' How does that shape how you read his story?

Reflection

Where do you need to hear 'be strong and courageous' from Joshua 1 right now?

Points to Jesus

Joshua ('Yeshua') brings Israel into a land of rest, but Hebrews 4:8-10 says he did not give them the final rest — Jesus does. The first Joshua led God's people across the Jordan; the greater Jesus leads His people across death into the inheritance no Canaanite could keep them from.

Discussion questions

  1. Joshua 1:7-9: What does God repeatedly tell Joshua, and what does He tie that courage to?
  2. Joshua 24:14-15: What choice does Joshua place before Israel, and how does he go first?
  3. Hebrews 4:8-10: Why does the author say Joshua did not give Israel true rest?
