Jesus Bible Study Guide

Jesus

Jesus

Promised Messiah; born in Bethlehem, crucified under Pontius Pilate, raised on the third day.

Teaching prompt

How does Jesus fulfill the promises traced through this entire family tree?

Reflection

Which figure in this lineage most surprises you as part of Jesus' story, and why?

Points to Jesus

Every line of this tree points here. Jesus is the promised Offspring of the woman (Genesis 3:15), the Seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16), the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5), the Son of David (Matthew 1:1), and the prophet, priest, and king all the patterns anticipated. Luke 24:27 says that 'beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.'

Discussion questions

  1. Matthew 1:1 calls Jesus 'son of David, son of Abraham.' Why does Matthew open with that exact summary?
  2. Luke 24:25–27: What does Jesus say about how to read the Old Testament?
  3. Hebrews 1:1–4: How does Hebrews describe what changed when the Son arrived?
