Jeconiah Bible Study Guide

Jeconiah

Jeconiah

Also called Jehoiachin; reigned three months before being carried into Babylonian exile.

Teaching prompt

Jeremiah 22:30 says no descendant of Jeconiah will sit on David's throne. How does Jesus inherit that throne anyway?

Reflection

Where might God be writing a surprising 'yet' over a line that looked closed?

Points to Jesus

Matthew names Jeconiah in Jesus' legal line (Matthew 1:11-12), but Jesus is born of Mary, not biologically of Joseph. Through Joseph's legal line Jesus inherits David's throne; through Mary (Luke 3) He bypasses Jeconiah's curse — a quiet but stunning resolution.

Discussion questions

  1. 2 Kings 24:8-17: What happens to Jeconiah (Jehoiachin) and to Jerusalem?
  2. Jeremiah 22:24-30: What is the weight of God's curse on his line?
  3. Matthew 1:11-16: How does Matthew handle Jeconiah in Jesus' legal genealogy, and why does the virgin conception matter here?
