Isaiah Bible Study Guide

Isaiah

Isaiah

Prophet in Judah from Uzziah to Hezekiah; foretold the virgin-born Immanuel and the suffering Servant.

Teaching prompt

Why does so much of the New Testament quote Isaiah when explaining who Jesus is?

Reflection

Read Isaiah 53 slowly. Which line lands most heavily on you today?

Points to Jesus

Isaiah is the most quoted prophet in the New Testament. The virgin's son named Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14, cited in Matthew 1:23), the child on David's throne whose government has no end (Isaiah 9:6-7), and the Servant pierced for our transgressions (Isaiah 53) are all read by the apostles as direct portraits of Jesus.

Discussion questions

  1. Isaiah 6:1-8: What does Isaiah see, and how does he respond?
  2. Isaiah 7:14 / Matthew 1:22-23: How does Matthew read this prophecy?
  3. Isaiah 53:4-6: Who is the 'we' and the 'he' in this song?
