Isaac Bible Study Guide

Isaac

Isaac

Child of promise; nearly offered on Mount Moriah; father of Esau and Jacob.

Teaching prompt

Isaac is the long-awaited child of promise. How does his very existence preach grace?

Reflection

What promises of God have you waited longest for, and how has the waiting shaped you?

Points to Jesus

Hebrews 11:19 says Abraham received Isaac back 'figuratively speaking' from death — a picture of the Father offering His own beloved Son. Jesus, like Isaac, carried the wood up the same range of hills (Genesis 22:6; John 19:17), but unlike Isaac was not spared.

Discussion questions

  1. Genesis 22:1–14: How does Isaac respond to his father in the climb up Moriah?
  2. Hebrews 11:17–19 says Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead. How does that change how you read Genesis 22?
  3. Romans 9:7–9 contrasts Ishmael and Isaac. What does Paul learn from that contrast about how God's promises work?
