Points to Jesus

Malachi 4:5-6 promises Elijah before 'the great and awesome day of the LORD,' and Jesus identifies John the Baptist as that Elijah (Matthew 17:11-13). At the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8) Elijah himself appears with Moses to point all attention to Jesus, the prophet greater than them both.
