David Bible Study Guide

David

David

Shepherd of Bethlehem anointed king; united Israel and received the covenant promise of an eternal throne.

Teaching prompt

How does David hold together being 'a man after God's own heart' with his serious sins?

Reflection

What does honest repentance look like in your own life, compared to David in Psalm 51?

Points to Jesus

The covenant of 2 Samuel 7:12–16 — an everlasting throne in David's line — is fulfilled in Jesus, 'the son of David' (Matthew 1:1) whose kingdom has no end (Luke 1:32–33). Acts 13:22–23 explicitly links David to 'a Savior, Jesus.'

Discussion questions

  1. 2 Samuel 7:12–16: What exactly does God promise David's house?
  2. Psalm 51: What does David ask for, and what does he refuse to offer?
  3. Acts 13:22–23 reads David's life through the lens of Jesus. How?
