Teaching prompt

Why does an act of worship turn into the first murder?

Reflection

Where does unaddressed resentment toward someone else's blessing sit in your own heart right now?

Points to Jesus

Abel's righteous blood cried out from the ground for justice (Genesis 4:10), but Hebrews 12:24 says Jesus' blood 'speaks a better word' — not crying for vengeance but securing mercy. Cain's pattern of hating the righteous one who exposes him previews the world's hostility toward Christ.

Discussion questions

  1. Why is Cain's offering rejected, and what warning does God give him before he acts?
  2. How does Cain respond to his brother, and what curse follows?
  3. How does the New Testament contrast Cain and Abel?
