Boaz Bible Study Guide
Boaz
Boaz
Wealthy Bethlehemite who redeemed Ruth, becoming great-grandfather of David.
Teaching prompt
What does Boaz's kindness to a foreign widow teach us about kinsman-redemption?
Reflection
How does Boaz foreshadow Jesus as our Redeemer?
Points to Jesus
Boaz is Israel's pattern of the goel — the kinsman-redeemer who pays the price to bring an outsider into the family. Jesus is our greater Boaz: He becomes our kinsman in the incarnation (Hebrews 2:14–17) and redeems us at the cost of His own life (1 Peter 1:18–19), bringing Gentile 'Ruths' into the covenant family.
Discussion questions
- Ruth 2:8–12: How does Boaz treat Ruth before he is obligated to?
- Ruth 3:9–13: What does the language of 'redeemer' carry in the law (see Leviticus 25:25)?
- Ruth 4:13–17: How does the community read Boaz and Ruth's marriage?
